New World is set in a supernatural, alternate version of 18th-century North America. It's the Age of Exploration, and explore you will, as you find yourself washed ashore on a fictional island called Aeternum. Tasked with colonizing this wild, cursed area, you must discover what's behind the corruption that's eked into every part of the island. You've also got a chance to make a name for yourself in this uninhabited wilderness as you (and others) work to raise new villages and landmarks. It's fairly typical MMO fare, but it does lay the groundwork for some fun RPG elements, if you're interested in really diving in deep.
PvP is entirely optional, but those seeking brawls will find themselves well supported. You can ignore it entirely, or turn it on while in a sanctuary and then head out into the world to start crushing some skulls. It's open, but centred around forts, which can be besieged and taken by opposing factions. There are PvP quests, too, which players have to perform on behalf of their faction to build up to a war declaration.
Speaking of character creation, the choices are a bit limited but what is here does look good and it all seems to cater to enough styles that most should be able to find their ideal character within the options available. Once you get your bearings, the standard quest types and somewhat shallow characters will quickly become apparent. Regardless of the small amount of context around them, almost every quest basically amounts to go to the place, kill the things, and loot the stuff. Thankfully this is often balanced out by the very approachable gameplay and exploration that stays fun longer than you might think it would.
